Admission Requirements
Admission to the program is competitive and based on
criteria intended to identify prospective students who demonstrate the
greatest potential for successful completion of the curriculum. The
applicant must be in good academic standing at the time of selection
to be considered a candidate for admission. Dental Hygiene applicants
must meet all general admission requirements and Registered Dental Hygienist
(RDH) essential functions. The application and file completion deadline is the first day in which campus offices are open after January 1 of the year for which admission is sought. Applicants will be considered for admission to the program based on the submission of the following documentation:
- Completed and signed ATC Admission Application and $20 nonrefundable application fee
- Official transcript showing a minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in high school and on all college work attempted.
- Documentation of completion of college mathematics (MAT 191 or MAT 196,) human anatomy and physiology I & II (AHS 191 and AHS 192 or BIO 193 & BIO 194), medical microbiology (BIO 197), and chemistry (CHM 191) or equivalent courses with grades of a C or better. It is the APPLICANT’S RESPONSIBILITY to confirm the transferability of courses taken at other colleges and universities with the ATC Registrar NO LATER than the January Intent Deadline.
- Appropriate Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET) scores of not less than the 50th percentile. Test scores must be less than five years old on the intent deadline date. (See HOBET, NLN, and SAT Test score requirements in the current ATC Catalog. Applicants should take the HOBET no later than November to receive consideration for admission to the program for the following year.)
- Three forms of recommendation from individuals familiar with applicants academic or work history, community service, extracurricular activities, and leadership abilities.
- Documentation showing the completion of 40 hours of observation in a dental office, preferably with a registered dental hygienist.
- Signed Dental Hygiene Code of Ethics- available from the Program Chair.
- Completed and signed Intent Form.
A group of the highest ranking applicants (based on the above criteria)
will be invited to participate in a formal interview and essay writing
process. From this group, 16 students will be chosen. If admitted
to the Dental Hygiene program, the student must have the following
current official documents on file in the department prior to entering
any DHY course:
- Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
and basic first aid (Course C)
- Copy of immunization records;
- Results of medical and dental examinations (conducted
a maximum of six months prior to admission); and
- Verification of health/accident insurance.
