Program Description
Accreditation
The Athens Technical College Veterinary Technology Program is
accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)
as a program for educating veterinary technicians. Enrollees
should be aware that obtaining licensure, certification, or
registration status as a veterinary technician with most states
requires graduation from an AVMA-accredited program, the successful
completion of the Veterinary Technician National Examination,
and, in some cases, the successful completion of a state-administered
examination.
Associate Degree Program
The Veterinary Technology program combines general education
and basic science courses with specific courses related to
veterinary technology over seven quarters of continuous study.
The second year of study is particularly unique in that both university
and private practice settings are utilized to obtain hands-on
clinical training; this program may require evening and weekend
participation on the part of the student. The veterinary technician
is expected to possess critical thinking and problem-solving
skills, refined psychomotor skills, and a commitment to lifelong
learning. A desire to work with people as well as animals
is critical to success in veterinary technology. Program graduates
are awarded the associate of applied science degree.
