Adult Literacy
While the programs and services provided
by the Business and Industry Services is at the core
of our efforts to assist companies throughout the 12-county
service area, we realize that providing adults with
opportunities to improve their basic academic skills
and assisting welfare clients and other special populations
in obtaining basic skills is essential in preparing
a skilled workforce. Athens Technical College provides
basic academic skills and GED preparation courses at
Career Opportunities Centers in each of the 12 counties
in the service area. These courses are provided at no
cost to the participant. The courses are individualized
in order to address each participant's own unique needs.
Classes are provided on each campus, technical education
center, and at sites in each service area county based
on the following subjects:
- Basic or remedial reading and math;
- Academic subjects at the secondary level to provide
preparation for the Tests of General Educational Development
(GED);
- English as a Second Language for members of the
international community; and
- Specific assessments and self-improvement skills
needed for jobs or additional training.
Tests of General Educational Development. The Tests
of General Educational Development (GED) are five tests
on the subjects of writing skills, social studies, science,
and literature and the arts, and mathematics. The tests
are designed to enable people who did not graduate from
high school to demonstrate that they have acquired the
knowledge and skills usually associated with the completion
of a four-year high school program of study.
We offer free GED preparation classes on each campus and at locations in all
service area counties. GED testing is conducted on the main campus and at
locations in Greene, Elbert, Hart, Walton, and Wilkes counties on a scheduled
basis.
Workplace Education. We also conduct workplace
education classes for employees for area business and
industry either on-site or at another convenient location.
Classes may include instruction in basic or more advanced
reading and math, GED preparation, English as a Second
Language, or specific academic skills needed for employment.
