Albert Van Helden

Albert Van Helden (Van) was born in Gouda, the Netherlands, and immigrated to the United States in June 1960. He attended high school in Manhasset, NY before returning to the Netherlands in 1966, where he joined the Merchant Marines for two years. Van returned to the United States in 1968 and joined the U.S. Army, where he served for more than 22 years. In 1979, Van took a three-year break in his military career to earn a diploma in Research Lab Technology from Athens Technical College and to complete a course in real estate. After retiring from the Army, Van returned to Athens Technical College in 1993 to attend the Associate Degree Nursing Program, and again in 1996 to attend the Accounting Degree Program. He worked in various phases of accounting until 2009 when he retired.
Van has been very involved in the life of his community as a volunteer. He served as Exalted Ruler for Elks Lodge 790, State Officer for the Georgia Department of AMVETS, Commander of the American Legion Post 185, and Chairman of the Clarke County Veterans Council. He also served as National Judge for the Antique Automobile Club of America. Van is a member of the Alpha Beta Gamma Honor Society, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is married and has one son.
