WHAT VETERANS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT VETERANS EDUCATION BENEFITS
All programs of study at Athens Technical College are approved for veteran's education benefits. Benefits may be used to earn a degree, diploma or certificate.
Your Veterans Certifying Official at Athens Technical college is Bob Hardy, 706-355-5146, FAX, 706-425-3086, email address email@example.com, Financial Aid Office, Building H-710. Your connection to information about your VA education benefits, in addition to your Veterans Certifying Official, is the "One Stop" VA Education Service website www.gibill.va.gov and the VA toll free service number (1-888-442-4551).
Research your options carefully with a VA counselor before you apply for VA education benefits! If you are eligible for both Post 9/11 and Montgomery G.I. Bill benefits, you will lose your MGIB benefits if you choose to receive Post 9/11 benefits! For counseling before you apply for VA education benefits or in order to get answers to questions about your established VA education benefits account, you can call the toll free number (1-888-442-4551) to speak to a VA counselor, or you may visit the web site: www.gibill.va.gov. You have the ability to ask questions if you speak with a VA counselor or, on the web site, send a secure email inquiry by selecting "Questions and Answers". You may speak with a VA education benefits counselor Monday through Friday during normal business hours. You may also contact the Athens VA office at 706-369-5630. You can apply for VA education benefits through your School Certifying Official, or on line using the Veterans On -line Application Website, VONAPP, which you can access at www.gibill.va.gov. When you receive your Certificate of Eligibility for VA education benefits, bring a copy to your Athens Tech Veterans Certifying Official immediately.
If you are transferring to Athens Technical College from another school, and you have previously used your VA education benefits, you must complete an application with the VA for Change of Place of Training or you will risk delaying the receipt of your benefits. You can do this on line at VONAPP or you can submit a paper application to your Athens Tech Veterans Certifying Official. Please submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility for VA education benefits to your Athens Tech Veterans Certifying Official as soon as possible. Please be aware that if a transcript review from previous schools reveals courses taken that satisfy course requirements in your Athens Technical College program of study, you cannot retake those courses at Athens Tech and have them certified for VA benefits.
It is IMPORTANT for you to understand your responsibilities in order for you to receive correct and timely VA education benefits. Once you are receiving VA educational benefits, it is your responsibility to certify your enrollment with the VA at the end of each month. (This is NOT required if you are receiving post 9/11 benefits.) On the last day of each month, you may call using Interactive Voice Response 1-877-823-2378 and follow the instructions, or you may use the internet WAVE program at www.gibill.va.gov and follow the links to the WAVE program. It is also your responsibility to let your Athens Tech Veterans Certifying Officer know immediately when you register for classes for a new term, when you drop, add or withdraw from classes, and if you change your program of study.
