Students in the Interior Design program at Athens Technical College channeled their creativity and design skills into a variety of works that will compose the Second Annual Interior Design Student Showcase in May at the Student Center (Building H). The students will open the showcase with a reception from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, at the Student Center.
The designers — Amanda Archambault, Joana Barbosa, Susan Chapman, Amanda Gober, Victoria Gordon, Kristina Herring, Deb Kight, Sunny LaCavera, Natalie Marlow, Sarah McGahee, Katie O’Kelly, Shannon Reilly, Katelyn Stephens, and Candace Taylor — will present projects they worked on during summer and fall semesters in 2013 and spring semester this year.
Model furniture, drawings, room designs, and other examples of their work will be included in the presentations that represent the students’ studies in Interior Design Fundamentals, Technical Drawing for Interior Designer, Materials and Resources, CAD Fundamentals for Interior Design, History of Interiors and Architecture I and II, Interiors Seminar, Design Studios I, II and III, Interiors Internship, and Business Practices for Design Professionals.
The Athens Technical College Interior Design students are coming off a recent win in competition at the Athens Home & Garden Show. The weekend of February 22-23, the students handily out-designed University of Georgia Interior Design students in the White Room, a project that involved transforming a 12’ x 14’ space into a nicely appointed room for the home. Students had a “virtual” budget of $1,500 to shop at the two area Athens Habitat for Humanity Restore locations for furniture and accessories and then adapt the pieces for their design.
Phillip C. Myer, program chair for Interior Design at Athens Technical College, said the upcoming showcase at the college provides an opportunity for his students to demonstrate the scope of their training in the program.
“We are excited to host our second annual Interior Design Student Showcase,” Myer said. “This exhibit allows the Interior Design program at Athens Technical College to celebrate the achievements of our students.”
Myer said the students and program faculty members are looking forward to hosting industry professionals, college staff members, students’ friends and family members along with the general public during the opening reception and exhibition dates.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday, May 1, 2, 5, and 6.
