Grant graduated from the University of Georgia in 1985 with a BBA in Accounting. He served as a captain in the U. S. Army for five years. Following military service, Grant earned an MBA from the University of Georgia in 2001. He is an alumnus of Leadership Georgia (Class of 2005). Grant currently serves as President-elect for the Athens Symphony. He is a board member and Past President of the following organizations: Athens Rotary Club; Boy Scouts of America, Northeast Georgia Council; Food Bank of Northeast Georgia; Prevent Child Abuse Athens; United Way of Northeast Georgia (where he also served as Fundraising Chair); Young Men's Christian Association. Grant also serves on the Board of Athens Academy Preparatory School, Athens Area Community Foundation, Athens Area Economic Development Foundation, Athens Area Country Club, Athens First Bank and Trust, Benson's, Inc., Athens Technical College Foundation (where he serves as Treasurer), Mercy Health Care Center, and Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. Grant is a past board member and Treasurer for the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the Administrative Board of Athens First United Methodist Church.

Grant is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a member of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Georgia Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Georgia. Grant is the recipient of numerous honors and awards.
