The Health Information Technology program prepares the student to become a health information technician (HIT). The HIT plays an important role in the maintenance of health information systems in a variety of healthcare facilities. The HIT must be proficient in technical as well as supervisory skills in performing such functions as information analysis, records, storage and retrieval, health statistics, coding and abstracting of diseases and operations, assignment of MS-DRG's, keeping patient information confidential and protecting it from security breeches, and assisting the medical staff in performance improvement and research. Most responsibilities are primarily performed as office work with minimal contact with patients. The program consists of a combination of classroom, laboratory, and professional practice designed to meet the requirements for an associate degree based on standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Information and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
