Cosmetology Students Learn from Guest Barber
Date: July 10, 2015
Students in Theresa Cleghorne’s cosmetology practicum class received a valuable demonstration from a veteran barber. Raymond Duncan brought over 60 years of experience to the class as he demonstrated various barbering skills for the students. While he showed techniques on using scissors versus clippers and how to trim a beard, he also shared stories from his years as a barber and shop owner.
After graduating from Emmanuel College, Duncan enlisted in the Navy where the first haircut he gave was to the ship’s captain. After that initial haircut, he became a popular barber on ships and when in port while perfecting the flat top military cut. In December 1955, Duncan began cutting hair in Athens and in 1957 he opened Mr. Flat Top (now Mr. Hair Cut) on Broad Street. Now (mostly) retired, Duncan still gives his children and grandchildren haircuts while sharing his vast barbering knowledge with a new generation of master cosmetologist.
“Having Mr. Duncan show our class barbering tips helped prepare students for experiences they will have working in a salon,” said Cleghorne. “His style and technique are second nature to him. It is important for our students to develop those same skills when working with clients.”
