Dental Hygiene Students and Faculty Volunteer to Provide Free Dental Care
Date: July 16, 2015
Students and faculty from the Dental Hygiene program volunteered with the Georgia Mission of Mercy (GMOM) on June 19 and 20. Held this year in Perry, Ga., GMOM is a free, large-scale portable dental clinic for low- and no-income adults who are unable to pay for dental care. Over the two days, Athens Technical College students and faculty assisted volunteer dentists and other dental health professionals to provide dental care and oral health education to more than 2,200 patients.
“Our Dental Hygiene students completed a learning and community service experience by volunteering with GMOM,” said Tina Grile, Dental program chair. “Throughout the two-day event, students spent numerous hours assisting dentists and educating patients about the importance of oral health.”
Dental Hygiene students helped with oral hygiene treatments, took radiographs, and assisted dentists. Students also provided patient education. Wendy Menjavar and Tania Garfias, both Dental Hygiene students, served as Spanish language translators during the two-day clinic.
As an outreach program of the Georgia Dental Association (GDA) and the Georgia Dental Association Foundation for Oral Health, the GMOM dental clinic is held every two years. GMOM partners with the America’s Dentists Care Foundation to conduct GMOM events. Over 600 GDA member dentists and 1,200 clinical and community members volunteered during the 2015 GMOM dental clinic.
