Nominees Announced for Instructor of the Year
Date: December 3, 2015
Nominees for the annual Instructor of the Year distinction were recently announced. Six semi-finalists were selected from nominations received from college faculty, staff, and students. To be eligible for nomination for Instructor of the Year, individuals must have taught full-time at Athens Technical College for three consecutive years by January 2016.
The student choice nominee was Jennifer Burrell. College faculty and staff nominated five instructors, including Teresa Bowles, Dr. Alysen Heil, Patty Melnick, Dr. Jackie Wilson, and Stuart Rolf.
“It is always an exciting time to recognize our outstanding instructors – the people at the front classrooms and standing beside our students – making the difference in student success with outstanding teaching and learning,” said Dr. Gail Thaxton, Athens Technical College interim president.
The nominees completed interviews on November 24 with an internal committee comprised of former Athens Technical College Instructor of the Year recipients. Three finalists will be named to participate in an interview process with a panel of local business and industry leaders. The college winner will represent Athens Technical College at the regional competition for the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction and at the TCSG Leadership Conference in Spring 2016.
The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors TCSG’s most outstanding instructors. The award has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, the award was renamed in honor of the late Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Georgia Technical College, formerly known as West Central Technical College, who received the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence. TCSG provides oversight for the Rick Perkins Award program through the system’s office, the college presidents’ Academic Affairs Committee and the state planning committee.
