Move on When Ready Student Receives Culinary Scholarship
December 11, 2015
Cedar Shoals High School junior Deonte Sandoval has already earned a technical certificate of credit (TCC) and will have completed 18 hours of college credit course work at Athens Technical College by the end of the fall semester. To add to his list of accomplishments, Sandoval recently received a scholarship from the World Chefs Scholarship Foundation (WCSF).
“The WCSF scholarship will really help me pay some of the fees associated with college,” said Sandoval.
Sandoval earned a Prep Cook TCC last year by taking Culinary Arts courses at the Athens Community Career Academy. By the completion of Spring Semester 2016, he will also earn a Food Production Worker I TCC. His instructors praised his strong work ethic and passion for cooking.
“We are excited to have Deonte as part of the Culinary Arts program,” stated Chef Scott Howard, Culinary Arts program chair. “He is determined and enthusiastic about learning and cooking.” As for his future plans, Sandoval would like to earn an associate degree in Culinary Arts from Athens Technical College and then continue his education. Ultimately, he plans to open a restaurant and name it after his grandmother, who had a tremendous influence on his excitement for cooking.
“I stayed with my grandmother in the kitchen, where I developed a passion and love for cooking,” said Sandoval. “I like to see people taste and enjoy food.”
Sandoval has been an active participant in the Culinary Arts program and placed third in Cupcake Wars at the Athens Home and Garden Show in February. He is also active with his high school as a member of the Cedar Shoals High School football team. At the Athens Community Career Academy, Sandoval is a member of Jobs for Georgia Graduates and serves as a student ambassador. Sandoval is the son of the Reverend Lamar and Marchelle Sandoval. Marchelle Sandoval is the transition specialist for the Office of Adult Education at Athens Technical College.
