Program Overview

Since the expansion of the Port of Savannah, the transportation industry contributes about $620 Billion to Georgia’s economy. With the industry shortage of about 80,000 drivers, there are endless opportunities for entry level drivers as well as experienced professional drivers. Athens Technical College is located conveniently in the Southeastern Hub Port of Georgia that can easily transport goods to all major big cities in the southern part of the United States.

Drivers may deliver from a manufacturer to a distribution center, from a distribution center to a customer, or between distribution centers. In addition, drivers may be responsible for loading and unloading their cargo. They are also responsible for following applicable laws, keeping logs of their activities, and making sure that their equipment is in good working condition. A student must have obtained their DOT medical card, and their commercial driver learner’s permit to be admitted into the entry level driver training (ELDT) CDL program. Although salaries will vary among the different employers, our students typically have a starting salary range of $55K to $65k. We have a number of transportation companies that will hire our students immediately upon graduating form our program including McElroy Transportation, Schneider Transportation, and Averitt Transportation.
